Cameras to the People

All the talk I hear about cameras on police gives me pause. Now that we know how greedy the security apparatuses are for every little detail of everyone’s life, I can’t imagine extending that range to include every traffic stop, every sad moment of someone acting out of control.

The videos that documented the outrageous commonness of the murder of Black men by police did not mostly come from the police. They came from citizens. It is not the technology that has brought accountability, but our power in using it. That is why we so often have to fight for the right to record police-citizen encounters. Let’s don’t cede that power to the very organizations where a failure of accountability has let such ugliness grow.
